Driving Tour: African American Burials in Green Lawn Cemetery

Date

Saturday, Jun. 25, 2022

Time

10AM - 12PM

Location

Green Lawn Cemetery

No registration is necessary and the event is FREE. All are welcome.

After a year-long effort to understand Green Lawn Cemetery’s complicated past in a century of social change, the stories on the driving tour are designed to showcase a small part of what we are finding through the work of a dedicated genealogist, Nettie Ferguson. The stories were chosen for their diversity of circumstances. While some may be known, new information has been added or corrected. Other stories focus on those who were voiceless in history books. From 10:00am -12:00pm students from Fort Hayes Metropolitan High School will be at gravesites to share the research in stories.

Meet at the Huntington Chapel (near the center of the cemetery) promptly at 10:00am for a brief orientation and directions. This driving tour that can be at your own pace.

An exhibit of these and many other stories is in preparation with our project partners: Columbus Metropolitan Library; Columbus Landmarks Foundation; and the students of Fort Hayes Metropolitan High School. With the generous support, and patience during COVID, from the Ohio History Fund, Ohio History Connection.
